Panic Alarm FAQs

What does a panic alarm do?

A panic alarm allows someone feeling unsafe to discreetly call for help by pressing a button which is linked an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). Users might activate the panic alarm if they’re in danger, suffer an injury or feel threatened.

Panic alarms are also called “panic buttons”, “duress alarms”, “lone worker alarms”, “SOS alarms”, “personal attack alarms” or “hold-up alarms”

Pressing the SOS button on a panic alarm raises an alert to an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). ARC Controllers will receive the alarm and start monitoring the situation. Based on the information they can collect from the user and their profile connected to the panic alarm they will determine a course of action which may include calling an escalation contact or initiating a blue light response.

If you have been given a panic alarm, you should activate it any time you feel unsafe or threatened (e.g. receiving abuse, walking alone in the dark, suspect you’re being followed). It can also be activated if you start to feel unwell.

A professional panic alarm linked to an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) is dedicated to keeping users safe. Having a panic button has proven to give users increased confidence and feelings of assurance that if an emergency situation happens, they will be able to get help and support. At Peoplesafe, we have examples of panic alarms working to keep users safe every day.

The best panic alarm is one that is connected to an accredited Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) and does not rely on family and friends to react in an emergency. Peoplesafe panic alarms are available in both device and app formats to suit the needs of the user, and are all supported by our in-house ARC.

Before dispatching any services, a 999 operator will need to know who the user is, where they are, what service they require and the incident taking place. When a panic alarm is activated, the ARC Controller will have this information, saving valuable time. In addition, the ARC Controller is trained to handle emergency situations and stay calm allowing them to relay information to the emergency services that someone experiencing the situation may not be able to do effectively.

Most panic alarms work using a mobile SIM card and will need a mobile phone signal to raise an alarm. To improve connectivity Peoplesafe offer a roaming SIM in our dedicated devices which is able to use the strongest connection of any of the three major network providers in the UK. This increases the chance of securing a mobile phone signal.
